REQUIREMENT

  • Assumed knowledge: None.
  • Minimum duration: Courses are over 2 days. (see below) The taught part of the course is usually two consecutive Saturdays.
  • Minimum age: 12 yrs. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate.
  • Course content: Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard, basic navigation, collision regulations, close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres.
  • Ability after the course: Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft. Hollowell minimum standard to drive a powerboat unsupervised.

This course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. SUITABLE FOR ALL MEMBERS.
We welcome non-member students - singles as per the dates below but if there is three or more we can discuss suitable convenient dates.

A RYA issued Powerboating ID card will be issued to those satisfactory completing the course AND AFTER completing a volunteer EXTRA duty (one day) (see 'Duration' below)

You will need to provide a passport style photograph on completion of the Powerboat course.

For members of the club the course and certificate are free. However, you will be required to purchase the RYA ‘Start Power-boating’ and the RYA ‘Powerboat Schemes & Logbook’. Both will available at the start of your course.

Duration:

Courses are over 2 days. An extra 3rd day is required for Hollowell members to complete the course. It is an opportunity to put your new skills into practice, by providing safety cover for an 'extra-duty' day as a boat officer for a dinghy courses, youth training Sundays etc. Please book this date on to the DutyMan system.


RYA Safety Boat Course

REQUIREMENT

  • Assumed knowledge Basic understanding of sailing boats and windsurfers.
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate must be held prior to this course
  • Minimum duration: Courses are over 2 days.
  • Minimum age: 16yrs.

A two-day course running at the same time (but separately) as the Powerboat Level Two courses.

This course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities. It includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

Course content Preparation, boat handling, dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak or canoe rescue (can be covered as theory), towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users

Ability after the course Able to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing. Be able to helm the rescue boat as a ‘BOAT OFFICER’.

We also run courses mid-week (usually Thursdays) this is arranged if three or more people can do it - contact Carol if you think this may suit you better.

In order to allocate yourself as a BOAT OFFICER on the duty rota you must have the PB2 certificate. If is recommended that ALL PB2 holders also do the Safety Course.

If an experienced (non-certificated) power boater joins the club it is possible to have a direct assessment done. Contact Carol Halliday

If a certificated PB2 member joins us we will ask you to complete a 'local knowledge' course which takes about 1 hour.
